U-Pass Bash! October 21, 2009

Hundreds of Students Gather to Record Message to the Premier

VANCOUVER - Students rallied today to celebrate the hugely successful $25/month U-Pass and record a video message to the Premier that they want all Metro Vancouver students to be included in the program. The  “U-Pass Bash” included five, eight-foot long buses that transform into a message to the Premier, “A $25 U-Pass for ALL Metro Vancouver Students”. Vancouver City Councilor Geoff Meggs spoke at the rally to deliver a Proclamation from Mayor Gregor Robertson that October 21 will hereafter be “U-Pass Day” in Vancouver.

“Hundreds of students have left their classes to attend the U-Pass Bash because we want to be treated the same as the 65, 000 students at SFU and UBC who have had a $25 U-Pass for over five years. A $25 per month U-Pass would make affording school a lot easier.” Said Nimmi Takkar, External Relations Coordinator for the Students’ Unions of Vancouver Community College.

Last Thursday the Premier appeared on 99.3 The Fox to answer British Columbia’s questions, including questions about the U-Pass. The Premier reiterated his U-Pass commitments made during the May general election. Organisers of the U-Pass Bash note that students are looking for the details of the Premier’s commitment including, most notably the price of the program.

“The U-Pass is an investment in the next generation, in the economy and the environment. As the largest and most successful U-Pass program in the Province the UBC U-Pass program and price should be expanded to all Metro Vancouver students.” Said OnePassNow Organiser, Tiffany Kalanj.
